Heading to Class in January
by Sonja G
Dear Friends at St. Peter,
As I prepare for my third round of two-week intensives at Luther Seminary this January, I continue to be thankful for the support of this community of faith. Your financial support has made it possible for me to continue to serve as Director of Faith Formation during this time of study and formation as a leader, and your kind words of encouragement continue to reinforce the external call essential to this process.
On January 7 I will head to Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota, for my January intensives and will return January 21. I stay the entire two weeks, weekends included, as the time is necessary to complete the coursework. My classes will include Preaching (which continues as a half credit online course in the spring) and Race and Protestantism. Due to the nature of these classes (cramming in a semester’s worth of work in a week) the preparatory reading has already begun. While I am there I will be in classes daily from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and have additional work in the evenings to prepare for the following day. I look forward to the ways these courses will stretch my understanding and continue to form me as I work toward my Master of Divinity in hopes of being called to be an ordained pastor in parish ministry in the ELCA.
In addition to this coursework, these two weeks are an important time of connection with my fellow classmates as we attend class, study, worship, and live in close quarters with one another. These have become some of my closest friends as we support and challenge one another and grow as leaders. I look forward to this time of connection and relationship building.
I am also thankful for your support through prayer for me and for my family. Being away for two weeks can be a hard adjustment, and I am grateful for my husband, Scott, and my kids who carry on in my absence. Please continue to pray for them and the adjustment this process brings.
I look forward to returning and continuing to partner in ministry as we learn about God’s great love for all of God’s creation and live into our call to spread that light and love to the world around us, pointing always to the incarnation of God’s love, Jesus.
Grace + Peace,
